By riding into Jerusalem on a donkey Jesus publicly reveals himself as the Messiah and shows he is both sovereign and gentle. So do we crown him King in our hearts or reject him?
In this final chapter of Hosea we are forced to contemplate Israel's predicament, God's character and his incredible offer of forgiveness. His love and justice are right for all those who walk in His ways and yet a stumbling block to those who reject His mercy.
The potential conflict between God the Father's compassion for his "son" Israel and his anger at their sin is only resolved in Christ, the true son, who enables us all to be children of God, childlike but not childish.
Acknowledging who God is, in entirety, puts us in the right position before him and it is in this humble place of empty hands and broken hearts that confession is welcomed and forgiveness assured.

Hosea 2 continues the theme of Israel being in a marriage-like relationship with God. But it is a relationship that had gone wrong. Israel had become like an adulterous spouse. However, God will not allow his covenant with Israel to be frustrated. He will be their God and they will be his people. Good Friday and Easter Day demonstrate God's continuing but renewed covenant with the spouse of Christ, the Church. Hosea's enacted prophesy of marrying a promiscuous woman strikingly illustrates the seriousness of sin as spiritual adultery and the loving commitment of God to his people despite their/our unfaithfulness.
