Discipleship is not a self-improvement program demanding an iron will and remedial behaviour modification. Rather, embracing Jesus as Lord grows us through the careful hearing of his word.

Acts 9 describes Saul's dramatic conversion to The Way' (see v.2). While some elements of his conversion are unique, others are essential for all Christians: (i) an encounter with the risen Christ, (ii) surrender to Jesus as Lord, and, (iii) service in the community of Christ. James brings the message of the book so far to a challenging climax: he lays down the charges of economic 'murder' and 'adultery', calls on us to return to the Lord with an undivided heart, and directs us to restore any relationships that have been disfigured by our pursuit of wealth and pleasure.
